From Generation to Generation: Teaching the Faith to Children According to Deuteronomy 6.4-9

Abstract: This article aims to analyze the intersection between discipleship and faith teaching for children, based on the passage from Deuteronomy 6:4-9, known as the Shema of Israel, one of the central texts of the Jewish faith and which guides spiritual formation. The objective of the study is to understand the historical and theological context of this biblical passage and to identify principles applicable to the spiritual formation of new generations. The research is characterized as bibliographical, explanatory, and qualitative, based on the biblical analysis of the selected text, whose chosen version is the New International Version. Additionally, works by commentators and authors in the field of Christian education are used. Initially, the historical context of the book of Deuteronomy is examined, addressing aspects such as authorship, recipients, place of writing, date, and purpose. Then, a theological analysis of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is carried out, highlighting the confession of the oneness of God, the commandment of integral love for God, and the responsibility of transmitting divine teachings to future generations in the daily life of the family. In developing the arguments, the way in which Jesus takes up this text in the Gospels, presenting love for God as the greatest commandment, is considered. The results indicate that biblical discipleship has a continuous, relational, and intergenerational character, involving the active participation of the family. It is concluded that the biblical principles presented in Deuteronomy remain relevant for teaching children, especially regarding the integration between family life and the spiritual formation of children.
