Theological and Legal Implications of Implementing the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) in Religious Organizations
Abstract: Theology, conceived as knowledge about God's revelation, is a science that deals with life, human relationships, and the relationship with transcendence. With the Bible as its primary source, Reformed Christian Theology presents itself in different approaches, such as Practical Theology, Systematic Theology, and Biblical Theology, among others. This article focuses on Practical Theology, understood within the context of a religious organization of Baptist origin, doctrine, and practices. With the enactment of Law No. 13.709, of August 14, 2018, known as the General Data Protection Law (LGPD), the government, companies, and institutions were challenged to adapt to the new legal requirements, whether by the force of the legislation itself or by the institutional commitment to responsibility, governance, and transparency. In light of theological and ethical reflections, grounded in Baptist history, doctrine, principles, and practices, Baptist churches, in particular, and religious organizations in general, can more clearly explain their nature, values, and commitments, observing the legal text without disregarding their theological foundations, rather ratifying them and assuming a participatory and democratic stance. With the implementation of the LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law) in a religious organization as a subject of reflection, this article adopts the case study method, choosing the Pioneer Baptist Convention of Southern Brazil and its LGPD Compliance Project as the object of analysis. The theological, historical, ethical, legal, and practical implications of handling personal and sensitive data in the context of ecclesiastical management are examined.
