Do the Ten Commandments establish a universally valid ethical foundation?
Abstract: This article explores the validity of considering the Ten Commandments as a universally valid ethical foundation. It examines their origin, historical and religious context at the time of reception and in subsequent generations. In Jewish tradition, the Ten Commandments are fundamental to religious and ethical life, forming the basis of the Torah and playing a crucial role in religious education. In Christianity, Jesus reaffirms and expands these commandments, emphasizing love for God and neighbor. They also impact other religions such as Islam, Spiritism, Mormonism, and Jehovah's Witnesses, reflecting universal ethical principles. Beyond their religious value, the Ten Commandments have profoundly influenced legislation and morality in the Western world, serving as a basis for contemporary laws against homicide, theft, and perjury. They have shaped cultural and social aspects in education, literature, and the arts, and have been associated with social movements such as the abolition of Sati in India, promoted by missionary William Carey. The commandments range from exclusivity in worshiping God to ethics in interpersonal relationships, such as honoring parents, preserving life, maintaining marital fidelity, respecting others' property, being truthful, and rejecting covetousness. This study provides a clear understanding of the historical, religious, and cultural significance of the Ten Commandments, demonstrating how they continue to shape morality and influence legislation in modern society.
