Liberation Theologies as a Thermometer of the Current Condition of Brazilian Evangelicalism
Abstract: This article aims to analyze whether a relationship can be established between the number of believers who adhere to liberation theologies and possible shortcomings in biblical Christianity. To this end, it initially presents a definition of liberation theology and describes its original and derivative forms. It then discusses related themes in order to provide context for the subject. The focus subsequently shifts to the central research question: could the advancement of liberation theologies serve as an indicator of shortcomings in authentic Christianity? This analysis is important because it may help churches identify and address possible weaknesses, thereby preventing believers from joining religious movements that, in many cases, undermine the Reformed faith. The article also examines doctrinal aspects that, from the author’s perspective, distinguish these theologies from traditional biblical Christianity, as well as possible reasons why believers adhere to these approaches. It concludes that this search may indicate weaknesses within Brazilian evangelicalism, particularly regarding the ability of churches to address people’s concrete needs and connect theological reflection with Christian practice.
Keywords: Liberation theology. Feminist theology. Black theology.
