Michelangelo's Christology: reflections on the Sistine Chapel paintings
Abstract: The present research examines the work of Michelangelo Buonarroti, especially the ceiling paintings of the Sistine Chapell, from an artistic and theological point of view. The objective is to understand the artist’s intention in composing these works. Based on academic sources in art, history and theology, it was possible to observe how Michelangelo’s internal tensions – such as his desire to please God, his fear of the final judgement and his admiration for the Greco-Roman beauty pattern – are conveyed to the observer through his work. The conclusion drawn was that Michelangelo’s aim was to conduct the observer to admiration and submission before the glory of God. The study also presents the Renaissance context and the religious and cultural tensions that shaped the artist’s life, describes the arrangement of the ceiling paintings, and examines possible connections between the central scenes, the Trinity, and the Last Judgment. In light of John Dixon Jr.’s interpretation, the analysis considers the ensemble of images as a possible invitation to contemplate Christ, reflect on the human condition, and seek reconciliation with God.
