Destructive zeal: when care for the things of God surpasses the will of God (historical perspective)

Abstract: Zeal for the things of God is an important aspect of Christian life, as it expresses commitment to faith, the Word of God, and the mission of the Church. However, when lacking balance, knowledge, and love, zeal can become destructive, leading to intolerance, persecution, abuse of power, and actions that contradict God's will. This paper aims to analyze manifestations of destructive zeal in different periods of Church history, identifying their motivations, consequences, and possible connections with practices in contemporary ecclesiastical contexts. It examines the Imperial Church, highlighting doctrinal conflicts involving Arius and Nestorius; the Medieval Church, marked by power struggles, the Crusades, the Inquisition, and attempts at reform; the Reformed Church, considering religious conflicts involving Anabaptist groups and John Calvin's actions in Geneva; and the Modern Church, focusing on fundamentalism and the reactions of certain Christian groups to cultural and scientific changes. The analysis also relates historical events to contemporary situations, particularly regarding the abuse of authority, excessive emphasis on institutional structures and traditions, intolerance of differences, and the weakening of the Church's commitment to evangelism. It concludes that Christian zeal must be guided by knowledge of God's Word, love for one's neighbor, and an understanding of the Church's mission. Thus, defending the faith should not become an instrument of oppression but should contribute to the witness of the Gospel and the edification of the Christian community.
