Judges 19 and the Sovereign grace of God
Abstract: This article aims to analyze Judges 19 in its historical, literary, and theological context within the Book of Judges, focusing on the violence committed against a Levite’s concubine, the failure of the characters involved to protect her, and the consequences of these events for the people of Israel. First, the article presents an overview of the book, addressing its structure, authorship, dating, and historical context. It then examines the actions of the Levite, the host, and the men of Gibeah, highlighting the severity of the sexual violence, the failure to protect the woman, and the moral and religious crisis portrayed in the narrative. The study draws on reference works on the Old Testament and biblical commentaries, including those by Cundall and Morris, Ellisen, Mesquita, Wiersbe, and the Beacon Bible Commentary. Finally, the article offers a theological reflection on divine mercy and judgment in the face of human sin. It concludes that Judges 19 portrays Israel’s profound moral and social disorder and warns of the consequences of violence, omission, and the failure to take responsibility for injustice. The interpretation of divine mercy, however, requires caution, since the text does not explicitly state that Gibeah was spared immediate destruction through a merciful intervention by God.
