Law and Literature: Lewis and Paul in Dialogue
Abstract: The present article presents a study on the manner in which C. S. Lewis employs his literary work to convey his thought and personal experience concerning the relationship between the human being and the Law of God. To this end, the object of analysis is The Pilgrim’s Regress, as well as the dialogue established between the work, Lewis’s own life, and the Apostle Paul’s account in Romans 7. The central question this article seeks to address is: how can the problem of legalism be understood through C. S. Lewis’s Imaginative Theology? The hypothesis advanced is that, drawing on Romans 7 and on his own personal experience, Lewis demonstrates that a legalistic relationship with the Law of God offers no relief to the soul, but rather produces frustration due to repeated failures and fear of condemnation. Based on a bibliographical research methodology, the main findings include: (1) the legalistic and moralistic society portrayed in The Pilgrim’s Regress leads the protagonist to develop an incorrect understanding of the relationship with the God of that world; (2) the Apostle Paul’s account reveals a profound inner conflict and frustration regarding the fulfillment of the law; and (3) the legalistic outlook to which Lewis was subjected during his adolescence contributed to his abandonment of faith and his subsequent immersion in atheism.
